Specifying Carpet Tiles for Open-Plan Offices: Acoustics, Class 32/33, and the FOB Math

Meta description: How procurement managers specify carpet tiles for open-plan workspaces — acoustic backing, EN 1307 wear classes, static control, and the FOB-per-m² math that separates a cheap tile from a low lifecycle-cost tile.

Open-plan offices are where carpet tiles either earn their spec or expose a lazy RFQ. A procurement manager googling “best carpet tiles for open plan office acoustics”or “Class 32 vs Class 33 office carpet”is usually 3 weeks from a fit-out start and has three fights going: the architect wants Milliken, the FM wants replaceable tiles, the CFO wants the China FOB number.

This is the buyer-side note that closes those fights.

Acoustics is the first reason open plans pick carpet tile

Hard floors in an open plan with 40 desks generate a reverberation mess. Carpet tile with cushion or PVC+glass backing cuts impact sound (ΔLw) by 18–30 dB versus bare slab, and absorbs airborne chatter better than LVT. For an office buyer the number to ask is not “is it quiet” but:

ΔLw ≥ 23 dB with cushion backing, or ≥ 18 dB with standard PVC, tested to EN ISO 10140.

If the supplier cannot give a ΔLw figure, they have never sold to a real open-plan spec.

Class 32 vs Class 33 — the line buyers blur

EN 1307 wear classification is not a marketing badge:

  • Class 32 (General Commercial) — open-plan offices, meeting rooms, light cart traffic, 8–12 yr life
  • Class 33 (Heavy Commercial) — call centres, corridors, lobbies, rolling chairs 8 hrs/day, 7–10 yr heavy life
  • Class 34 (Very Heavy) — airports, stations — rarely needed in offices

The classic procurement error: specify Class 32 in a corridor because “it’s all office”. The corridor fails in year 3. Spec one class above the actual traffic — Class 33 for any space with carts, printers, or >25 people/100 m².

Fiber and backing: the 4 combinations buyers actually see

  1. SD Nylon + PVC backing — default office workhorse, $5.50–8.50/m² FOB Shanghai, Bfl-s1 easy
  2. SD Nylon + Bitumen backing — moisture-tolerant, common for ground-floor offices
  3. SD Nylon + Cushion (WellBAC-style) — acoustic open plan, $8–12/m² FOB, ΔLw 25–30 dB
  4. PP + PVC — budget back-of-house, $3.20–4.80/m² FOB, avoid in main workspace (static + crush)

Procurement managers comparing “Shaw Contract EcoWorx vs China FOB equivalent”are really comparing row 1 above against a PVC-free tile. The FOB gap is 35–55% — but only justified if fire certs, dye-lot continuity, and replacement stock match.

Static, chairs, and the things that fail at month 6

Two silent killers in office carpet RFQs:

  • Static > 2.0 kV — winter in Seoul/Tokyo/Chicago, staff get zapped, IT complains. Insist on < 2.0 kV per EN 1815.
  • Castor chair matting — PP fibre or low face weight (<500 g/m²) shows chair paths in 6 months. Require EN 985 castor test “continuous use”.

A buyer who forgets these two lines will be back in the market in year 2, explaining to the CFO why the “cheap” tile cost double.

The FOB math procurement managers should do before choosing

Don’t compare $5.80 vs $6.40/m² alone. Run:

Tile A: $5.80/m² FOB, PVC, 550 g/m², Class 32, ΔLw 17 dB, no castor cert
Tile B: $6.90/m² FOB, PVC+glass, 680 g/m², Class 33, ΔLw 21 dB, castor OK
Difference: $1.10/m² × 6,500 m² = $7,150 upfront
But Tile A replaces at year 6 partially (labour + downtime ~ $4/m² relaid)
Tile B runs 10–12 yrs, 1-tile spot swaps only
Lifecycle delta favours B by ~ $2.20/m² over 10 yrs

The more expensive FOB tile is the cheaper floor. This is the single calculation most office buyers skip because the tender form only has one “unit price” column.

RFQ micro-checklist for open-plan office carpet tiles

  • Zone the floor: open work (Class 33 cushion), meeting (Class 32), corridor (Class 33), reception (Class 33 bold pattern)
  • Ask ΔLw in writing, not “acoustic backing”
  • Ask EN 1307 class in writing
  • Ask static < 2.0 kV
  • Ask castor chair EN 985 result
  • Ask attic stock % (vendor should say 3–5%)
  • Ask batch reservation window (≥ 4 months)
  • Ask FOB Shanghai / Ningbo band, not EXW factory

A supplier answering all eight without a chase email is your shortlist of one.
