I almost didn’t recognize the place when I visited last month for a follow-up.
Three months prior, it was wall-to-wall faded broadloom. Narrow corridors, crammed workstations, and a faint but persistent odor in the walkways. Now? Dark and light gray carpet tiles in alternating patterns, with hexagonal modules in the lounge area that have become the unofficial photo backdrop for team selfies.
This is Tefloor’s recently completed project for a Hangzhou-based AI startup.
The Pre-Renovation Pain List
The admin director laid out a full page of complaints:
- Existing carpets were four years old, corners curling up, taking a full week to dry after mopping
- Meeting room acoustics were poor—phone conversations from adjacent spaces bled through constantly
- Leadership felt the overall atmosphere screamed “budget hotel,” completely misaligned with their tech brand positioning
- Budget was tight: 200 employees, total cap at ¥80,000 RMB
After hearing all this, our designer said one sentence: “Carpet tiles will solve about 80% of these issues.”
How Tefloor Approached It
Step 1: Zoned Design
No one-size-fits-all approach. We divided the space into three zones:
| Zone | Solution | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Open office | Dark gray + mid-gray checkerboard pattern | Hides dirt, visually organizes cluttered desk layouts |
| Meeting rooms | Solid dark gray PVC-backed tiles | Improves acoustics; creates visual depth against glass partitions |
| Lounge/corridors | Hexagonal modules with brand-blue accent tiles | Creates focal points and strengthens spatial identity |
Step 2: Addressing Acoustics
The original meeting rooms had single-pane glass partitions—sound transmission was severe. We compensated through flooring: 6mm-thick PVC-backed carpet tiles, which delivered approximately 12dB of high-frequency noise reduction in testing. Combined with wall-mounted acoustic panels, the result met expectations.
Step 3: Cost Control
Carpet tiles shine here. Only high-wear zones need future replacement. We advised reserving 10% extra inventory for pantry and printing areas. Long-term maintenance costs became nearly negligible.
Final cost: ¥76,000—¥4,000 under budget.
What Changed Afterward
The most interesting feedback came in small details shared by the admin director:
- Employees started posting photos from the lounge area on social media—”finally a decent backdrop”
- Meeting room bookings increased; teams were more willing to hold longer sessions inside
- The cleaning crew’s workload actually decreased—vacuuming tiles is far easier than wet-mopping broadloom
- During investor tours, the CEO paused specifically at the blue hexagonal corridor section for a photo op
What This Project Taught Us
Office floor renovations don’t always require starting from scratch. Often, the right product combined with thoughtful zoned design delivers a major upgrade on a modest budget.
In this project, Tefloor functioned less as a vendor and more as a spatial consultant—from site survey and design to installation oversight. This is why more companies trust us with their flooring: we understand both the physical space and the actual needs of businesses.
Considering an office upgrade? Start with a conversation. Tefloor provides complimentary site surveys and design proposals—we solve problems before selling anything.
