Tefloor Export Division · B2B Sourcing Guide
Milliken is usually described as a carpet manufacturer. That description is not wrong, but it misses the point — and for a buyer, the point is what actually makes the product sell.
Milliken was founded in 1865 and has been a private materials science business for more than 160 years, with upwards of 11,000 innovations across textiles, speciality chemicals, healthcare and flooring. It only entered carpet manufacturing in 1968. That lineage explains the product’s behaviour: Milliken treats a floor as a performance component with numbers attached, not as a decorative surface.
What you are actually buying
WellBAC® cushion backing — standard, not optional. Since the mid-1990s Milliken has built cushion backing into every carpet tile rather than selling it as an upgrade. It is PVC-free, chemically inert and open-cell. The claims are specific and measurable:
| Benefit | Figure |
|---|---|
| Muscle fatigue reduction vs hardback | up to 24% |
| In-room and through-floor noise reduction | up to 50% |
| Extended carpet life vs hardback | up to 50% |
| Moisture-related claims | None in over 20 years (company statement) |
That acoustic figure is the one that sells in open-plan offices and hotel corridors. The fatigue figure is what sells it to facilities managers. The moisture record is what saves you a claim.
Two companion technologies complete the system:
- TractionBack® — a high-friction backing that holds tile in place with no wet adhesives, primers or sealants. Faster, cleaner, low-odour installation, and the reason phased or occupied refurbishment (a hotel that cannot close floors) becomes practical.
- StainSmart® — a chemically bonded stain and soil resist treatment applied as standard, with AlphaSan® antimicrobial protection on many lines.
PrintWorks™ — customisation at production speed. Built on Milliken’s Millitron digital dye-injection heritage, PrintWorks delivers samples in as little as four days from concept and custom orders in roughly three weeks. For a branded workplace or hospitality project, that collapses the traditional bespoke-carpet timeline from months to weeks — without the usual minimum-order penalty.
Regional footprint — why this matters for export
Milliken’s Asia Pacific headquarters and R&D centre are in Shanghai (a LEED-certified facility with an innovation gallery), with galleries in Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore, and sales coverage across Tianjin, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Hefei, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, plus India (Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai), Seoul, Tokyo, Manila and Jakarta. PrintWorks custom manufacturing is handled at its Sydney facility, and the Milliken-Ontera brand serves the Australia/New Zealand market.
For an export buyer this means specification support, samples and technical answers in-region, and a design team developing collections for Asian interiors rather than adapting Western ones afterwards. The Passage collection, for instance, was developed out of the Shanghai studio and launched at Design Shanghai.
Note: ship-from origin varies by style and backing — confirm with us per order so your origin certificate and duty planning are correct.
Sustainability that is already resolved
This is where Milliken removes work from your desk:
- All Milliken carpet, LVT and entrance flooring is carbon neutral globally, delivered through the M/PACT™ programme. There is no “request the carbon-neutral version” step — it is the baseline.
- Products are PVC-free, Declare Red List Free, and Cradle to Cradle Silver certified, with CRI Green Label Plus for indoor air quality, Green Star Level A recognition in Australia and New Zealand, and RESET assessment for health and sustainability transparency.
- N/XT Life™ handles circularity — old tile is reclaimed rather than landfilled. One documented example: Milliken recovered post-consumer P&G material and manufactured new carpet tile for P&G’s Beijing office.
For an importer, this translates to a certification pack that is ready to hand to a green building consultant, instead of a six-week document chase.
Where Milliken wins in the market
Workplace. The core segment. Acoustics, ergonomic comfort and modular flexibility map directly onto modern office requirements. The Greater China reference list reflects it: AIIB, ICBC, Bank of China HQ, Shanghai Pudong Airport, Beijing Daxing Airport, Tencent, Alibaba, and the State Grid Xiong’an Innovation Centre — a certified zero-carbon campus where carbon-neutral material and low-emission backing were specification requirements, not preferences.
Hospitality. PrintWorks makes large-scale patterned public space feasible; modular format solves the operational problem hotels actually have — a spill in a guest room means lifting one tile, not closing the room for wet cleaning. Collections such as Revelation and Salt Lake are built for this. Milliken also has a serious casino and gaming practice where imprintable, high-durability patterned tile is a technical requirement.
Education and healthcare. Acoustics, hygiene and replaceability — all three inherent to the platform. OBEX™ entrance flooring traps up to 95% of dirt and contaminants at the door, protecting everything installed behind it. Worth bundling into the same order.
Typical specification
Frequently supplied configurations include 500 × 500 mm and 250 × 1000 mm plank formats, solution-dyed nylon (Type 6 / Type 6,6), total thickness around 5.3–5.5 mm, with 15-year wear, dimensional stability, anti-static and caster-chair warranties. Backing options: WellBAC® Comfort Plus (maximum comfort and acoustics) and WellBAC® Function (firmer, more stable for heavy circulation). Confirm the exact construction, fire rating and warranty for the style you are quoting — certificates are product-specific and expire.
Export & logistics notes
HS classification. As with other tufted modular carpet, exports generally classify under HS heading 5703 — typically 5703.29 for nylon/other polyamides (tiles ≤1 m²) or 5703.39 for other man-made textile materials. China export rebate for tufted carpet under Chapter 57 is currently 13%; destination duty varies widely, with preferential rates available under China–ASEAN (Form E) and RCEP. Verify code and rate for your market before contracting.
Packing. Milliken-Ontera style cartons are commonly supplied around 5.5 m² per carton, approx. 20 kg, roughly 32 cartons per pallet depending on format. Expect a 20ft container to load in the region of 3,000–3,500 m² depending on construction and packing, with 40ft HQ roughly double — but this is volume-sensitive rather than weight-sensitive, so we always issue a per-style packing calculation before order confirmation.
Documents available: Certificate of Origin / Form E / RCEP, fire test report (ASTM E648, EN 13501-1 or GB 8624 B1 per destination), CRI Green Label Plus, EPD / Declare / HPD, warranty certificate, dye-lot records, and installation and maintenance manuals.
Samples and custom development. Sample folders ship by courier. For PrintWorks custom work, allow for the 4-day sample / ~3-week production window and lock colour approvals early — speed does not remove the need for sign-off.
