If Sangetsu is the design editorial, TAJIMA the flooring systems engineer, and SUMINOE the hereditary carpet weaver, then TOLI (東リ) is the total-interior flooring pragmatist—the house that started with linoleum in 1919 and never stopped asking, “what else belongs on the floor, and how do we make the whole system install, clean, and recycle together?”
Founded in 1919 in Itami, Hyōgo as Toyo Linoleum Co., Ltd., TOLI produced Japan’s first domestic linoleum in 1920. It later expanded into vinyl tile (Matico, 1963), cushion vinyl sheet (CF Sheet, 1972), contract broadloom (“Grace,” 1970), carpet tiles (GA-100 in 1983), curtains, wallcoverings, and eventually a closed-loop carpet recycling plant. In 1991 it renamed itself TOLI Corporation. Today it ranks among the world’s top 15 flooring manufacturers, with carpet tiles, vinyl flooring, wallcovering and curtains all under one roof.

Project-Side Notes
- GA-400/GA-500 are PP, not nylon. Great for budget-sensitive tenant floors; for main corridors under castor chairs, step up to GA-3600 / GX / nylon-face lines.
- Sustive Back is a system, not a SKU. To claim the recycled-content credit, route old TOLI tiles through TOLI’s Japanese or authorized China/Shanghai take-back channel (TOLI Shanghai Corp. established 2014).
- Directional textured loops exist here too. GA-class tiles with high-low loop need arrow-aligned layout drawings before delivery, same as TAJIMA/SUMIOE.
- Don’t mix TOLI vinyl and tile heights blindly. Their strength is coordination—use the official transition strip schedule, not generic aluminum T-bar.
The Bottom Line
TOLI is the least “romantic” of the four Japanese names—it doesn’t sell you shadow-and-light philosophy or imperial-weave heritage. It sells a floor that arrived on time, passes Green Procurement Law, swaps one tile at a time, and goes back into TOLI’s own recycler in year ten.
